Automotive Problems That Can Lead to Traffic Accidents | By Lawrence Reaves

The majority of auto accidents are caused by driver error or conditions in which the motorist’s driving ability is impaired. Driver error can include recklessness, falling asleep, and poor decisions (for example, passing another car on a 2-lane highway). Impaired driving ability might result from drunk driving, being distracted while using a cell phone, or fiddling with an iPod.

Having said that, there were over 6 million accidents in 2005 (according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). While most were due to driver error or some level of impairment, mechanical errors contributed to over 10% of them. It’s important to make a quick distinction: by “mechanical errors,” I’m not referring to structural problems or defects. I’m referring to parts that wear out due to age or lack of preventative maintenance.

Below, we’ll explore a few problems that can lead to a potentially fatal traffic accident. You’ll notice that each of them are within your power to avoid or resolve.

Tires That Are Underinflated Or Severely Worn

When there is insufficient pressure within your car’s tires, heat builds more quickly. In cases of severe underinflation, they can overheat and blow out. You might remember several years ago when Ford Motor Company attracted criticism due to rollovers of their Explorers. The rollovers were actually caused by blowouts. Ford claimed the tires were blowing out because they were designed poorly. Firestone (the manufacturer), in turn, claimed their tires were fine, but drivers were not keeping enough pressure in them.

Worn treads are another problem that can lead to accidents. The treads perform multiple jobs. First, they form crevices that allow water to funnel through. Second, they help your wheels grip the pavement. When the treads wear down, water has no place to escape. Instead, it remains under the wheel and causes your car to hydroplane. Worn treads also reduce your wheels’ ability to grip the road.

Check your tire pressure and treads once every two or three weeks. Replenish the air or replace your tires when needed.

Worn Brakes

Your brake pads wear down with use. Every time you press down on your brake pedal, the pads and linings wear. The same is true for the hoses that transport braking fluid from your master cylinder as well as all of the metal parts involved with slowing your vehicle. The effects of deterioration in any of these components can be disastrous. If the pads wear down too far, they’ll lose the ability to stop your car. At some point, your rotors can become damaged. If the hoses deteriorate, fluid can leak, which will prevent your braking system from working properly.

Your tires and brakes play important roles in maintaining your safety on the road. Make sure your tires are inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended psi. If the treads are worn, replace them. As for your brakes, if you hear scraping or feel a “spongy” sensation when pressing down on the pedal, take your car to a repair shop. Have them check the condition of the pads, linings, and hoses. If you’re diligent about these maintenance items, you’ll substantially improve your safety on the road.
