Can’t Connect to the Internet | By Daniel Sanderson

This article is going to tell you a few basic troubleshooting techniques I use at work when someone can’t connect to the internet. You can use these on Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7. Obviously there are many programs which claim to fix network problems for you, however in my experience these never work, some may even cause more problems!

There are many techniques used that are completely free! So before you spend money on a one-fix magic program try doing some of the examples below, you may find they sort out your problem.

1. Try turning your modem and computer off at the plug for around 1 minute. You would be surprised how many problems this will solve, plus if you ring any helpline this will be the first thing they suggest.
2. Try ringing your Internet provider to see if they are having any issues/downtime in your area.
3. If you have to enter your login details at any point, make sure they are correct.
4. If you are on wireless and your connection is very intermittent then you could try changing the wireless channel. (This should be in your manual)
5. If you are on Windows XP you can try running the winsockfix. (Look on Google)
6. Potentially a virus could be causing your internet to not connect or look like its not connecting.
7. Try a different web browser. One such as Firefox, Google Chrome or Opera. Obviously if you can’t download one on your machine get one from another and transfer it via USB, CD etc.
8. If you think that your modem is to blame, rather than spending for a new one try ringing your internet provider and usually you can get one for free.

Obviously this is not everything you can try so please have a look at our Network Troubleshooting Guide for more advice. If you are having a specific problem, for example getting a particular error message then just try typing that message into Google, you can usually find the answer on there.
