Accident and Cell Phone Driving Statistics in the United States | By Richard Tann

Humans through evolution should continue to support building better breeds as “Survival of the Fittest,” maintain that the weaker counterparts will have fewer chances of reproductions. However such theory remains argumentative since a diverse breed of humans makes the world go round. Take for example if all humans are similar in likeness just like you and me, then we will have no talented musicians, no great authors, no bright engineers or doctors assuming that we are none of the above. The world will indeed be a boring place to live in. Then there are some people who are born to take bold decision while others are risk averse. Some are naturally good at multi-tasking especially the fairer gender yet others are only able to do things one at a time.

We may try to keep our survival rate high by keeping ourselves out of danger but we are constantly taking on risk and at the same time cannot avoid others from endangering our lives. Take for example cell phone driving or attempting cell phone text messaging while driving. We could perform such functions and thought accidents could never happen to us since we have done it countless of times.

The findings by Virginia Tech Driving Institute on July 29, 2009 show that statistics accidents by cars and trucks users, distraction caused by dialing cell phone increases the risk of accident driving incidents by 2.8 times. Distraction caused by cell phone text messaging while driving increases the risk of accidents driving incidents by 23.2 times in comparison to normal driving conditions.

According to the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), as of September 2009, a total of 18 states including District of Columbia have effectively banned all drivers from cell phone text messaging while driving. However, many people are still doing it, taking their chances against the law while endangering themselves and the lives of other road users and pedestrians.

For example, the new regulation under the California Department of Motor Vehicle comes into effect on January 1, 2009 against cell phone text messaging while driving. Similarly, prohibition for using cell phone while driving was effectively in place since July 1st 2009. The California law also denies teens under the age of 18 with valid driving license from using hands-free devices while driving. Whereas, a total ban is enforced for all age group from performing cell phone text messages while driving. Yet, we still find a lot of drivers continue text messaging since they can keep the cell phone out of sight and away from the window. Some drivers will attempt to perform a quick cell phone text messaging while stationery waiting for traffic light to turn green. The total ban on teenagers under the age of 18 with valid license means they will try to evade the laws by text messaging since they are not allowed to use hand-free while driving. To further complicate the issue, enforcing total ban on cell phone text messaging also mean drivers will always be on the look out for enforcement through their rear mirror while text messaging, which comes back to the very cause of accidents.

The main reason for total ban on cell phone text messaging while driving is because drivers will have to constantly take their eyes off the road. Therefore, even if adult age 18 years and above have the liberty of making hands free calls they will still have to keep their eyes off the road when dialing. Headsets and Bluetooth can only minimize our eyes off the road unless every driver start using voice activated automatic dialing. Realistically, its takes a while searching through ones cell phone directories to send a text message. Will this ask for the laws to be enforced on all cellular phone manufacturer that every cell phones must have voice assisted dialing functions! For single drivers under the age of 18, the reason for chatting with their friend on cell phone is to keep then awake while driving. Disallowing hands-free for this age group actually increase the risk of accidents for such drivers. Of course, they are suppose to refrain from driving if they feel tired but not all teenagers abide by the books while some rebellious teenagers take it as challenge against the authority while others are plain ignorant of the laws in place. Perhaps the current laws provided regulations aim to keep cell phone driving or cell phone text messaging accidents to a minimal but this does not fully eliminate risk of highway accidents while driving and using cell phone.

We may be quick in adapting to text messaging or talking on the cell with one hand holding it to the ear but there are numerous risk that does not fall into any regulatory category such as checking on your teeth with the rear view mirror while driving or adjusting your hair and operating car radio to quote a few example.

For whatever reasons we need to make calls or text messaging, there are many more reasons that can cause highway accidents while driving. For example keeping unrestrained pets in the vehicle which I will discuss in another article, slowing down and keeping your eyes on just happen accident, driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, avoiding road animals, driving beyond speed limit and irresponsible driving to name a few.

Automotive Problems That Can Lead to Traffic Accidents | By Lawrence Reaves

The majority of auto accidents are caused by driver error or conditions in which the motorist’s driving ability is impaired. Driver error can include recklessness, falling asleep, and poor decisions (for example, passing another car on a 2-lane highway). Impaired driving ability might result from drunk driving, being distracted while using a cell phone, or fiddling with an iPod.

  Shop your favorite magazines titles

Having said that, there were over 6 million accidents in 2005 (according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). While most were due to driver error or some level of impairment, mechanical errors contributed to over 10% of them. It’s important to make a quick distinction: by “mechanical errors,” I’m not referring to structural problems or defects. I’m referring to parts that wear out due to age or lack of preventative maintenance.

Below, we’ll explore a few problems that can lead to a potentially fatal traffic accident. You’ll notice that each of them are within your power to avoid or resolve.

Tires That Are Underinflated Or Severely Worn

When there is insufficient pressure within your car’s tires, heat builds more quickly. In cases of severe underinflation, they can overheat and blow out. You might remember several years ago when Ford Motor Company attracted criticism due to rollovers of their Explorers. The rollovers were actually caused by blowouts. Ford claimed the tires were blowing out because they were designed poorly. Firestone (the manufacturer), in turn, claimed their tires were fine, but drivers were not keeping enough pressure in them.

Worn treads are another problem that can lead to accidents. The treads perform multiple jobs. First, they form crevices that allow water to funnel through. Second, they help your wheels grip the pavement. When the treads wear down, water has no place to escape. Instead, it remains under the wheel and causes your car to hydroplane. Worn treads also reduce your wheels’ ability to grip the road.

Check your tire pressure and treads once every two or three weeks. Replenish the air or replace your tires when needed.

Worn Brakes

Your brake pads wear down with use. Every time you press down on your brake pedal, the pads and linings wear. The same is true for the hoses that transport braking fluid from your master cylinder as well as all of the metal parts involved with slowing your vehicle. The effects of deterioration in any of these components can be disastrous. If the pads wear down too far, they’ll lose the ability to stop your car. At some point, your rotors can become damaged. If the hoses deteriorate, fluid can leak, which will prevent your braking system from working properly.

Your tires and brakes play important roles in maintaining your safety on the road. Make sure your tires are inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended psi. If the treads are worn, replace them. As for your brakes, if you hear scraping or feel a “spongy” sensation when pressing down on the pedal, take your car to a repair shop. Have them check the condition of the pads, linings, and hoses. If you’re diligent about these maintenance items, you’ll substantially improve your safety on the road.

History of the Range Rover Vogue | By Morgan Kelps

While the Land Rover brand has existed since 1948 in some form or another. While the first prototype was developed in 1967, it was not until 1970 that the first Range Rover Vogue was rolled off the production line. Since inception, there have been a total of three Range Rover Vogue platforms, each generation more luxurious, powerful and innovative than its predecessors.

The first Vogue platform lasted from 1970 to 1995 and is commonly referred to as the “Range Rover Classic”. It was rather utilitarian in nature lacking most of the luxury features we commonly associate with the brand today.

  • 1981 – Four door version was released helping to make it more mainstream than the two door predecessor
  • 1986 – Lucas electronic fuel injection is introduced alleviating the reliance on carbuerators
  • 1986 – First Rover Vogue Diesels are introduced
  • 1992 – Air Ride Suspension is made available as an option on higher end trim packages (LSE)
  • 1992 – A new high end trim package with more creature comforts is launched in the UK, dubbed the Range Rover LSE
  • 1992 – Vogue 200Tdi turbocharge diesel engine is released
  • 1994 – Vogue 300Tdi turbocharge diesel engine is released

In 2007, things got really interesting with the unveiling of Land Rover Special Vehicles first factory produced armored Range Rover Vogue. This new era of range rovers weighed in at 3.5 tons (standard range rovers weigh 2 tons) and offer everything you would expect including run-flat tires, internal oxygen tanks, reinforced fuel tanks, bulletproof glass and more. This line of Rovers has been specially designed to withstand impacts from AK-47s, grenades, flame throwers and most other small arms.

In 2010, there were minor updates to the external look and feel, instead Land Rover opted for a significant updating of internal technology. This update has been led by a fully configurable 12″ TFT screen which renders a series ‘virtual’ dials and graphical displays to show everything from speed to the weather conditions outside. Another unique option is a surround camera system that displays in the TFT screen showing you the sides and back of the car for switching lanes or backing up. In addition, 2010 improved upon a few other best in class features offered in premium luxury vehicles including Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind Spot Monitoring and Automatic High Beam Assist.

To date, the Range Rover Vogue stands at the pinnacle of Luxury SUVs, its nearest regular production competitors the Mercedes G-Wagen (G55 AMG), Porsche Cayenne Turbo S and Lexus LX 570 are all fine autos but they lack the history and class that is the Land Rover brand. In fact, the brand is so well adored the Saudi Royal family and the British Royal family both drive armored versions on a daily basis,

4 Smart Tips For Increasing Your Vehicle’s Fuel Efficiency | By Lawrence Reaves

One of the most compelling reasons to keep your car longer – rather than buying a new model – is that doing so is less expensive. An older vehicle may need occasional repairs, but that’s far less costly than the loss in value a new model suffers due to depreciation. And given the economy, it’s more important than ever to save money.

With gas prices expected to rise dramatically over the next few years, it’s worth exploring ways to improve your older car’s fuel efficiency. Here are four smart tips that you can put into action immediately:

Mortons_Motorcycle Sport & Leisure - Subscription

Motorcycle Sport & Leisure is a monthly 116 page full colour magazine covering all aspects of modern leisure bike riding. New bike reviews, product news and events add to the unique mix of touring features and long term road tests.

#1 – Use The Proper Oil

Your engine plays a key role in the amount of gas your car consumes. In order to perform efficiently, its moving parts must be properly lubricated with the right oil viscosity. Thinner viscosities may be more appropriate given the weather in which you’re driving or the age of your vehicle. Some oils are specifically formulated to deliver better fuel efficiency.

#2 – Check Your Tire Pressure

When your tires are underinflated, they produce more resistance from the road. This increased level of resistance translates into more work for your engine as it toils harder to move your car. It consumes more gasoline in order to do so. Get into the habit of checking your tire pressure with a digital pressure gauge every two or three weeks. If they’re low, fill them. You can find the recommended psi on the tire, in the door jamb, or in your owner’s manual.

#3 – Avoid Warming Your Engine

Many years ago, it was a good idea to allow your engine to idle for several minutes before driving your car. This was especially true in cold weather because the oil needed time to circulate properly throughout the system. Today, engines are designed much better. There’s no need to let it idle for more than twenty or thirty seconds, even in freezing temperatures. Doing so not only wastes gas, but also prevents your engine from reaching its ideal operating temperature.

#4 – Provide Online Maintenance

Zinio.com - Centerfolds without the Staples

Your vehicle’s fuel efficiency can decline slowly as the aggregate result of several factors. For example, an air filter that has become clogged will prevent airflow to your engine. That lowers its performance and operating efficiency. Spark plugs can foul and cause misfires. Your front-end may become misaligned causing unnecessary pulling or drifting. Each of these factors can contribute to lower fuel economy. Replace your air filter and spark plugs according to the recommended maintenance schedule in your owner’s manual. If you suspect an alignment problem, have a mechanic resolve it.

As your car grows older, its fuel economy will suffer. You might not notice the effect immediately, but over time, less efficiency translates into higher costs. Implement the tips above to improve your vehicle’s fuel efficiency and save money at the gas pump.

The Love-Hate Relationship of Women and Cars | By Colleen Hensley

The truth: Women love driving. The cliché: Women hate cars.

Well, not really hate cars. There are just some things about cars that women hate.

Let’s face it, now that the men-would-always-be-better-than-women era is so over and old-fashioned, women are taking the world by storm. They are starting to buckle up and driving their own lives-or at least their own cars.

But still, we can never forgo with the truth that there are really things that women hate doing, but men prove to be very savvy with. There will always be things that men and women would perceive differently. Take for example cars. Men love everything about cars. It’s like the epitome of their true male ego. They are willing to do everything for the sake of keeping themselves and their car happy.

But with women, it’s a totally different story. And here’s why:

Car shopping is not real shopping
Women can spend hours and hours, even weeks, shopping for clothes, shoes, accessories, you name it. But you won’t catch them shopping even just for an hour for a car. They can tell you every detail they look for in a shoe, but when a car dealer starts telling them about the technical details of a car, they start to yawn.

Who cares about those details? As long as the wheels are turning, the car has good visibility and they will look chic and sexy in it, that’s all that matters. But of course, safety, maintenance cost, and interior space is important. Just that and a full tank is enough to make women happy.

Could somebody please translate the car manual?
If women are not interested in the technical details when buying a vehicle, what more with its manual. Sure, women love reading romance novels. But anything that has technical in its cover spells boring for them. But give that technical book to a man and that would instantly become his Bible for the rest of his life.

Where’s the nearest car wash station?
Women maybe the queen of housekeeping, but when it comes to cleaning and washing cars, they’d rather stick to dishwashing. It’s a great fun for women to drive cars, but they would rather have it washed than wash it themselves.

I just got my nails done. I’ll just wait for the tow truck to arrive.
Of course, women are caring individuals. In fact, too caring that they are willing to wait for hours for the tow track or the mechanic than have their newly polished nails ruined. If they don’t even care reading the car manual, well there’s really no need to expect that they would even dare repair their own car.

Zinio.com - Centerfolds without the Staples

And the best reason is…
There’s always something to complain about. Even the simple task of refueling is something to complain about. Sometimes, even a replacement car mirror need becomes a heated argument with their husband. After all, they’re attractive, intelligent career women. Why bother with replacements or refueling? Let the mechanic and the gas boy do these things.

BUT above it all, women do love cars… as long as there’s somebody else who will do the repair and maintenance for them.

Colleen Hensley is a management trainee. Her love for cars was wielded thru her car afficionado/mechanic father. The advantage of having such for a father are the things she learned on different auto parts like how parts work, like the engine, radiator, AC Condenser, shocks, etc. And how important it is to ensure that all safety contraptions, like the car mirror and the headlight, are in good shape.

Are Diesel Additives Really Worth It? | By M James

If you’ve been tempted by the claims of some diesel additives, then maybe you’re already convinced that they do make a difference, and will provide many benefits for the performance and economy of your engine. If you’re not sure, then here’s what you need to know.

1. Diesel additives raise the temperature at which diesel burns. This rise in temperature increases the energy created by the fuel.

2. Creating more energy means that there is an increase in power. This increase in power means that the engine is able to perform better. Some manufacturers claim that their diesel additives will provide up to 10% more power over a standard engine.

3. The additives also clean the fuel injectors in the engine, and keeps them clean. This again helps to provide an increase in performance as the filters are not blocked.

4. Lubricants in diesel additives can help to stop the metal parts of the engine from seizing up, and so will prolong the life of the engine.

5. Corrosion inhibitors are often found in these additives and make sure that the lubricants don’t cause the metal parts of the engine to rust.

6. Because there is an increase in economy, and more power the life of the engine is increased. This means that there is a reduction in running costs. For an individual the savings might not be that important, however for a transport or haulage company, or those involved with public transport, or taxis, the savings can be huge, and can mean the difference between making a profit and a loss.

7. Engines are more reliable, thanks to the lubricants and corrosion inhibitors, and the clean injectors. This means that there is less maintenance needed, which can represent a substantial saving for a firm with a fleet of lorries or a company that delivers their products.

8. Cold weather protection can be found in some diesel additives, which means that the fuel can still be used even when the temperature is very low. When diesel gets too cold, it stops being a liquid and forms crystals, and so won’t pour into vehicle fuel tanks.

9. As fuel quality can differ from manufacturer to manufacturer, and in different parts of the world, the engine’s performance can be subject to change too. This can sometimes lead to an increase in the amount of fuel used, or a decrease in performance. For haulage companies that might need their lorries to travel across several countries, or in remote areas, they can be reassured that diesel additives can help to maintain the performance and economy, and so the cost too.

10. There are many benefits to using diesel additives, and many reasons to try them. You might not necessarily be looking for more power, but want more economy. You might be looking for increased reliability and decreasing maintenance costs. You might want to be assured that your vehicle’s performance won’t be affected by different quality fuels in different countries. All of these are excellent reasons for trying diesel additives in your vehicle.

Zinio Digital Magazines - Trees will thank you

Now you know more about the performance, economy, reliability and maintenance improvements they can bring, perhaps now is the time to try diesel additives in your vehicle.

One of the earliest and most enduring of the magazine’s creations was its Car of the Year award, given almost continuously since its inception, although the phrase itself would not become entrenched until well into the 50s. The first winner was the 1949 Cadillac; the company turned it down. The award has gone through several splits and permutations over the years, being called the Golden Wheels Award for a while in the 70s and having given rise to Truck of the Year and Import Car of the Year as well as SUV of the Year. Nevertheless, it is still coveted by manufacturers and is usually covered by the mainstream press as the most important distinction awarded in the American auto industry.
