Hip Hop Beats – The Beginners Guide to Producing Beats | By Sammy Jameson

It’s All About The Bass Line

Have you ever been in a club, all sweaty and hot, and heard that one track that makes everyone jump to their feet and run to the floor? Did you ever wonder exactly what was it that made it stand out? It’s all about the bass line.

Hip-hop songs are usually driven by the bass line. Slow and rhythmic, or fast and thumping, hip-hop beats can be created by starting with a good 4 bar bass line. Add a hand clap every half bar and you’re in business. Of course, you will want to throw in some hi-hat cymbal and a good melody created on your keyboard. If you want to get all fancy, you might consider an arrangement of horns and/or strings. Personally, I don’t like my beats all cluttered up with a bunch of meaningless propaganda.

Short and sweet is the way I program my beats, but I always start with the bass line. You can also overlay the bass track by using 2 or 3 tracks of the same bass sound to really create a thumping sound that will shake your speakers. This process is called overdubbing.

The 808 bass is the deepest most heart-pounding bass you can find and if you use it in your track, the honeys are sure to shake what their mama gave ‘em. The hand clap or the finger snap is always a safe option when creating a hip-hop beat. Blend it in with the track, but don’t overdo it. Something like boom, boom ,boom, clap, and so on. You could also use variations of the bass line to fatten up the track.

Flow-ability

After every 4 bars, you want to include a breakdown in the beat, where the beat goes in a slightly different direction.

I’m not really a rapper, but I like to flow a little bit on the track to make sure that the delivery matches the beat. That is what your clientele will be looking for: smooth, flow-able beats that they gotta have to flow on.

Next you want to create a hook, or chorus for the song. This part of your track can be similar to the breakdown or it can be altogether different from the rest of the beat. It’s entirely up to you.

The important thing to remember is that your track must be a cohesive unit. The beat can’t be jumping from one path to another recklessly, there has to be a pattern, and the more bass you add, the better.

When you create a hip-hop beat, keep flow-ability in mind. The track should not be so cluttered up that you can’t fit some tight ‘spit’ within the bars. Bust a few fresh lines to put the finishing touches on your new creation. If you find that you cannot flow with it, then the track is probably garbage.

Practice, Practice, Practice

Finally, the most important element in creating a hip-hop beat is practice, practice and mo’ practice. Jordan could never have shot a free throw (and made it, yo) with his eyes closed during a game if he had not practiced religiously, shooting 1,000 free throws a day. Kanye West brags often about how he locked himself in his basement making beats for 3 consecutive summers. That is some true dedication to his craft, and it has paid off big time! Now he has a continuous library of tracks to call on, when it’s time to sell a track.

Keep practicing and shooting for the moon and you will at least be among the stars.

Easy Classical Guitar Songs | By Ricky Sharples

Classical guitar is a fascinating instrument to learn. The process of graduating from struggling to get your right hand fingers working to playing bass, melody and accompaniment together will keep you enjoying your guitar practice for a long time. Not that it takes that long before you are playing easy classical songs.

One of the things that the beginner classical guitar player notices is the noise his fingers make when his hand moves up and down the neck of the guitar. This has sometimes put potential students off learning to play. The sound of the fingers rubbing the steel-wound bass strings is sometimes louder than the music he is playing. You will find from experimenting that some strings have this problem more than others, but you will also develop the knack of lifting the tips of your fingers slightly when changing position without losing any accuracy in your playing.

In centuries past, what we call classical now was the only guitar style that existed. Whether it was accompanying songs or playing instrumentals, the music that was the product of strumming and plucking the guitar strings inspired many composers to write easy songs and pieces that could be played on the nylon string guitar.

You don’t need to confine yourself to classical songs and pieces in your repertoire, there are lots of arrangements of modern tunes for classical guitar. Apart from the classical guitar versions of songs by The Beatles which have been around for many years, classical guitarists have posted on YouTube videos of their arrangements of songs like Stairway To Heaven. The videos often provide a link to the tab for the tune so you don’t have to learn it by ear.

One of the most popular easy classical guitar songs is Blackbird by The Beatles. Everybody loves to play it and audiences love to listen to it. But there are easy songs and tunes from all ages that you can play after a few months of learning guitar. You can even find anthologies of easy classical guitar pieces such as 50 Easy Classical Guitar Solos by Jerry Willard. This book contains pieces from all periods of musical history written in standard musical notation and in tab form.

There are also collections of pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach like Sarabande No. 1 and Musette in D Major that are surprisingly easy for beginners to play. Also there are well known anonymous pieces like Packington’s Pound, Nonesuch, Kemp’s Jig.

The best thing about learning easy classical guitar songs is that many are beginner-friendly pieces that will yield great satisfaction without being difficult to play.

How to Apply For the American Idol Auditions | By Tyler Cohen

American Idol gives undiscovered talent a chance to be overnight singing sensations. Before you can become the next Carrie Underwood or Kelly Clarkson, you have to successfully get through the American Idol registration process.

All applicants have to register in person; there is no online registration. So the first step is to locate the closest audition city from the listed posted on the American Idol web site. The audition cities are spread throughout the country but if you live in a small town, plan a road trip. Carrie Underwood, for example, had to drive eight hours from her home town in Checotah, Oklahoma to audition in St. Louis, Missouri.

Home Theater is the largest monthly magazine exclusively dedicated to the home theater market, covering the latest in audio, video, surround sound, movies and music. Each issue contains system reviews, product comparisons, DVD software reviews, technical updates, and opinion pieces by the industry's most knowledgeable editors and writers.

Registration begins two days prior to the actual auditions and is on a strictly a first-come, first-served basis. Registration times will be updated on the American Idol website so arrive as early as allowed. It is not recommended to wait until the audition day to register. If the producers run out of time or space, latecomers may not be allowed to register.

There is no overnight camping allowed at the audition venues so expect a crush of people when you arrive. Make sure to dress for the weather-like any Hollywood show, it goes on rain or shine, hot or cold.

To register, you need two forms of ID to prove your age, such as a drivers’ license and birth certificate. There is no exception to the two ID rule. If you’re a minor, you must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

Once registered, you’ll get a wristband and a seat ticket. You can bring one guest, who needs to sign in the same time you do. They will also get a wristband and ticket. Once they put the wrist band on you do not take it off. If you remove the wristband for any reason, it becomes null and void. They might give you another on the audition day if space allows, but you’ll be at the bottom of the audition list, meaning your chances to perform will be slim to none.

The call time for audition day is 5:00AM. In addition to the wristband and ticket, you need to bring a signed release form, which can be downloaded from the AI web site. You’ll also have to show your two forms of ID one more time to finally get into the venue where the auditions are held.

It’s a time-consuming process but with patience, perseverance, and a little luck, you’ll get your shot at being America’s next singing idol.

In the “old days”, you could see MTV as well as pick and choose out a few of the notes that the guitar players in this clips were playing. Now, it is not quite that very easy. Of course, MTV plays very few music videos, and those that it does perform are usually not“performance” video clips – which means that we can’t see a band playing, but rather a visual depiction of a song or simply the artist’s vision.

How to Make Beats – Tips For Producing Your Own Beats! | By Richard Taylor

Learning how to make beats is so addictive, nothing tops taking a tune that you have in your head and turning it in to a real recording. Once you know how to do it, you’ll be obsessed with making the perfect beats.

To get started you can experiment with online beat making software, but I recommend you spend a few dollars on a decent music sequencer. You can pick up a decent package for well under $50.

Once you have your own sequencer software, you’ll have access to thousands of sounds that you can use to make your beats. Most sequencer packages come with tutorials that show you quickly and easily how to make beats.

When you get started making your first beat, have a style in mind that you want to create, such as hip hop or rap. Choose a song from your favourite artist and listen to how they’ve formatted it so you can use their format as a basis for your own track. For example, how have they formatted the intro, the verses, the chorus and the bridge? Think about what bar you want to use through the different sections of the song.

Once you have the format worked out, you need to start laying down the beat. With a decent sequencer package, all of these stages are pretty simple do to. When it comes to laying the beat, it’s simplest to start with the drums. When you record your drum pattern, you have to get it right, as the drums are the heart of your beat.

Once you are happy with your drum pattern you can layer it with other instruments and sounds. Start adding keyboard and guitar sounds to produce the melody, again with a quality music sequencing software package, adding sounds is made easy, and you can keep mixing with ease until you are happy. Layering is really about making you beat sound bigger by adding different instruments.

Finallly mix your beat, this is the crucial stage. Before you start mixing, make sure each track you’ve produced sounds great on its own. If your individual tracks sound good, the whole mixed beat will sound much better.

Once you’re done, your sequencer should be able to produce your new beat in mp3 format for you to upload and distribute on the internet, or simply download it to your ipod. Decent software will make this, and the rest of the production process simple to do, so if you’re serious about making your own beats, spend some dollars and get the most from your efforts.

Copyright Infringement Basics – A Copyright Lawyer’s Perspective
| By Enrico Schaefer

Few legal principles inspire more confusion than copyright law. Our copyright lawyers often spend as much time educating our clients as we do digging into their specific legal issues. Copyright law, like other intellectual property rights, is inevitably fact specific. Obtaining legal advice about your specific situation from a qualified copyright attorney is critical. Educating yourself about US copyright law so that you understand what your lawyer is telling you is just as important.

Copyright infringement is the unauthorized use of material that is covered by US copyright law, in a way which violates one of the copyright owner’s exclusive rights, such as the right to reproduce or perform the copyrighted work, or to make derivative works. A copyright holders exclusive rights include the right to: reproduce the copyrighted work; prepare derivative works based upon the work; distribute copies of the work to the public; perform the copyrighted work publicly; and display the copyrighted work publicly.

In order to prove a copyright violation of these exclusive rights under U.S. law, a copyright holder copyright holder must show that he/she is the “owner” of an original work and a prima facie case for infringement. Ownership of a copyright is established by showing “authorship” of an original work fixed in a tangible medium – articles, books, pictures, movies, musical recordings, etc. The person who created the original work is the copyright holder. A copyright holder may ‘assign’ the copyright to a third person, who then has all the exclusive rights of the original author, including reproduction, performance or the making of derivative works. The issue of who actually owns a copyright is one of the most overlooked and oversimplified issues. Some employers assume they own copyrights to their employees work. Employees and independent contractors sometimes incorrectly assume that they own work prepared for third parties. Ownership issues need to be identified and clarified early. Simply claiming ownership or an original work and registering the copyright may leave your copyright registration open to attack at a later date when rights are being asserted.

US Copyright laws help define the basics of copyrights. Section 17 U.S.C. § 102(a) provides: “Copyright protection subsists, in accordance with this title, in original works of authorship fixed in any tangible medium of expression, now known or later developed, from which they can be perceived, reproduced, or otherwise communicated, either directly or with the aid of a machine or device.” An idea is not copyrightable , although it might be patentable. Expression of an idea in a fixed tangible form (i.e., in written pages of a book, on a CD, on a web page, on canvas, as a printed photograph) affords the possibility of copyright protection. While these principles sound complicated, an experienced copyright lawyer can help you understand whether you can copyright protect your original work and receive the protection which copyright law affords.

Infringement occurs when a third person copies the copyright protected work. Unauthorized copying is proved with direct evidence (sometimes copying is obvious or admitted) or inference (not surprisingly, infringers often deny copying). Circumstantial evidence of copying is often important to show infringement.

Zinio.com - Centerfolds without the Staples

Registration of a your original work with the US Copyright office is not required for you to have common law rights. However, registration is often critical for enforcement and must occur before filing an infringement suit in Federal Court. Our copyright lawyers often receive calls from authors of original work who failed to register their works before learning of infringement. This can be a critical mistake making enforcement challenging or impossible.

Copyright claims are on the upswing as the internet makes ‘copying’ as easy as the click of a mouse. Original works are harder than ever to protect. Luckily, innovations in technology makes tracking infringement almost as easy as unauthorized copying. But you aren’t protected if you are not monitoring. Owners of original works need to understand how to register their works, as well as how to track on-line infringement in order to maintain their value as the author.

Enrico Schaefer is a copyright lawyer, specializing in intellectual property matters and on-line protection. Go to his web site to learn more about US copyright law or contact a copyright infringement lawyer directly for a free consultation, as well as the particular problems presented by on-line infringement.

Funk, Soul and Rhythm and Blues | By Tex Johnson

In 1970, a new strand of Rhythm and Blues (R&B) was hitting the airwaves, funk music. Rhythm and Blues artists like Little Richard, James Brown, Parliament Funkadelic, and the Meters helped to pave the way to R&B Funk topping record charts and filling nightclubs with a funky new beat.

Psychedelic soul hit the music industry in the late 60′s giving the R&Bs a blend of rock and soul with that had an upbeat tempo that one could move their feet to on the dance floor. It was the crack that led to the opening to funk and disco a few years later.

Funk music could be classified as a mixture of soul music with a dash of jazz, and R&B, with a strong rhythmic groove built from the electric bass, drums, and the electric guitar. They often have a strong horn section as well where the sax added the soul and the trumpets and trombone accented the rhythmic beats.

When taking a trip down funk music memory lane you can’t help think back to the 70′s artists such as Rufus feat, Chaka Khan, Earth, Wind & Fire, Eric Burdon & War, Tower of Power, Average White Band, The Commodores, and Kool & the Gang. The thing with funk music back in the 70′s and still today is that no one band or artists was bound to just that one style of music. These same artist and many more also played other genres of music such as disco and rare soul music. Funk just opened the doors to new venues as well as new genres of music such as disco beats, hip hop, and go-go and punk music.

By the early 80′s funk took on a bit more of a spin and became more sultry and sexual in content with the help of artists such as Prince. After all, the initial oncoming of funk was based off the idea of getting your groove on or sexual intercourse to be more direct. A song would start with a slow rhythmic groove working up to a harder, pounding, and more insistent and demanding rhythm.

The 80′s also brought musical instrument changes to the traditional funk sounds with the exchange from live horn sections to synth keyboards, organs and pianos were replaced with electronic machines and synthesizers as well. Even the drums were replaced by electronics taking a good part of the show out of funk today. Lyrics that used to be innuendos of sexual content have become straight out obvious sexual content.

Zinio Digital Magazines - Trees will thank you

The late 80′s and early 90′s brought funk into yet another light as rock bands started incorporating funk sounds to their venue calling it funk rock or funk metal. However through all the changes of Funk R&B influences that earlier performs such as James Brown, Sly and the Family Stone, George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic, Curtis Mayfield, The Meters, The Funk Brothers, and Bootsy Collins still remain.

Music Mixing Techniques and Music Mixing Tips | By Steven Grout

I recently realized that I did not know the music mixing techniques I thought I did and when I first started music production I learnt the hard way. I searched about for music production tips and music mixing online, during this time I found many opposing ideas that left me even more confused.

I am glad I did learn in the end though as I always thought there was something I was missing. I was right about that of course but I was looking in the wrong area; I thought it was with my song writing ability but the truth was I did know how to produce music. Here are a music mixing tips to consider and help you when you are mixing and recording music.

Write and record before doing any mixing – Before you start mixing make sure that the whole track is recorded (by you or someone else). This is rule number one on how to produce music. You cannot start to mix a track before it is finished as that would be like trying to decorate the insides of a house when the roof is not on yet. If you do start to mix a track before it is has finished being written it will never be finished because when you are writing you need to consider certain things and when mixing you consider different things. These two conflicting priorities will pull you right and left. If you are/have been doing this there is a good chance you are trying to use effects to mask a poorly written song or you need to learn and understand some basic music theory to pave a solid path forward. It is worth mentioning that you could be in need of some extra music production tips if you are having these problems when you do have a finished track

Always fix any problems with what has been recorded at the time of recording – If you are recording something or have been given a track from someone and you can hear that there is a problem somewhere in the track it is very important that this problem is rectified before going into the mixing process. It is important to set solid and clear boundaries between recording and mixing, I would say this is one of the golden rules that sits highly on the music production tips list. If you have just recorded a guitar part and something is not sitting quite right, maybe a note clash or something drops out of time briefly, fix it instantly. Either find a note that does not clash or re-record that specific bar around or in between the rest which works. Do not leaving it till the mix.

Stereophile never loses sight of the fact that its primary responsibility is toward its readers and how they choose to spend their hard-earned money. Whether you enjoy your music on LP, CD, DVD or SACD, Stereophile enables you to get the most from it.

Arrange your environment before you start – Before you sit down and start to mix a track it is important to get everything arms reach and make sure you have everything needed out and close to hand. This may not be one of the most helpful music mixing techniques but it is important for concentration. It is no good if you have to keep getting up and going through cupboards looking for specific boxes or needing to use something only to find that you do not have the right cable or batteries.

Another thing to consider is R.S.I, this is very common if you are working on the computer and it is important to make certain adjustments to reduce the chances of this.

There are many other music mixing tips to consider if you are interested in helping yourself understand how to produce music. I believe that if anyone ever wants to improve their music mixing techniques they should take a look at THIS website. It could be the case that you are stuck and do not know what to do next or it could be you are wanting to learn more skills and ‘tricks of the trade’, either way you should take a look.
