These nature outings are perfect for weekend and family travel ideas. Whether you take the kids or go alone, you can enjoy nature landscapes all morning and still be free the rest of the day. An early start is better to catch a glimpse of rainforest birds and monkeys and to avoid the harsh midday sun or frequent afternoon rain storms

Kanching Rainforest Waterfall – Just a short drive from downtown, this forest park is a fantastic introduction to a tropical rainforest. A large grassy area serves up excellent picnic space and the short trek up the hillside stops at several waterfall tiers, each with its own swimming hole. A perfect outing for kids or anyone else to refresh, see monkeys and get fresh air.

Selangor State Park Waterway – With a choice of three pit stops along the highway, the Tua River (Sungai Tua) offers a waterfall pool, lazy river dips among the boulders and a nice riverside stroll to shake off urban stress under the rainforest canopy.

Forest Research Institute of Malaysia (FRIM) – If you need everything in one location, then FRIM sets the nature fun standard. Take a jungle stroll on the forest paths, bring your bike for some good mountain biking workouts and linger along the easy sloping river for a picnic. And don’t forget to make it to the cool canopy walk for a nice view of the great green canopy from 30 meters high.

Klang Gates Quartz Ridge Trail – A massive quartz ridge over 22 kilometers long stands like a fortress wall protecting Kuala Lumpur. A narrow rocky path leads you atop to great views of the cityscape on one side and the rainforest reservoir on the other. A difficult trek over exposed and forested terrain offers a rugged and demanding hike for those seeking adventure.

Taman Rimba (Forest Park) Ampang – An easy and relaxing park for spending a day outdoors, this remnant rainforest still has monkeys and plenty of birds. But it’s a great place to hang out with a book, swim in the shallow river or just wander around to test out your nature photography skills.

Templer’s Park Jungle Waterfall – One of the original green lungs, this jungle waterfall remains a favourite for swimming, birdwatching and taking easy strolls by the riverside. Take the kids or just come alone and enjoy the rainforest atmosphere before returning for the nightlife of Kuala Lumpur.

Bukit Gasing Forest Park – Located on the border of Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya, Bukit Gasing is an urban park legend. A variety of jungle trails over hilly and steep terrain offer trekkers a good workout and a very accessible option for city dwellers.

Discover more information on nature vacation getaways from the gateway capital of Kuala Lumpur, and remember that a wild time is never that far away.

Packing For Backpacking – How to Pack Your Backpack For Your Hiking Adventure | By Rich D. Fan

If there’s one thing I’ve learned in past years, is how to really pack effectively for a backpacking trip. Many people who don’t regularly pack and embark on week long journey by foot, often confuse packing for backpacking, with packing for car-camping. Every year I pack my backpack, and venture out into the wilderness, and with that, every year I also regret some things, forget some things, and learn a whole lot. Living at 12000 feet elevation for a week and not being near electricity, running water, a soft bed, or any other luxury, gives you lots of time to think about what you should have brought. Even more, what you shouldn’t have brought!

Field & Stream is "The World's Leading Outdoor Magazine." devoted to the complete outdoor experience and lifestyle.

Why is packing the right things so important? First off, weight and volume! If you pack it, you have to carry it the entire trip, up and down those endless hills and switchbacks, jumping streams and climbing rocks! What you can stand to carry, depends on your physical stamina but even the most avid outback mountain men, like to travel light. Secondly, you want to make sure you have what you need without going overboard. This ensure safety and warmth and protection from the environment. So then, let’s begin looking at what you need to pack for your backpacking adventure!

The backpack itself: I’m not a big spender, and I don’t believe in spending $500 or $600 bucks for a backpack. Whatever you decide on though, make sure the pack has beefy zippers, durable canvas, strong seams and lots of compartments. It has to be big enough, or expandable, to hold all of your stuff too. Look for a man’s backpack to be 70 to 80 liters in volume, and a ladies backpack at least 60 to 70 liters.

Clothing: For summer hiking, please be a minimalist. Try to cut it down to 2 shirts, 2 underwear, 1 pant, gloves, beanie, hat, 4 pairs of socks, a light jacket or windbreaker, and a light plastic poncho or rain gear. You could bring some long underwear to sleep in too. That should suffice for a least a week up in the hills, and you can wash one set, while wearing the other. A good light hat and sunglasses are imperative as well!

Food: Freeze dried is the way to go! These come in plastic packages lined with Mylar, that you can actually pour boiling water into. They cook fast, and above all, taste pretty darn good! There are many commercial brands available at your local sporting goods or big box store. One trick I do is to poke a tiny hole in the top of the bag to let the air out, and seal the pinhole back up with a piece of tape. This allows you to pack it even tighter, saving valuable space, especially if you are required to pack your food in a bear-proof canister. Mayonnaise is good for sandwiches, and the oil in it is great for cooking. Get a powdered drink mix, or a even a powdered power or sports drink mix. Tortillas and pita bread packs well as does spam, dry salami, beef jerky, and trail mix. Oatmeal is fast and light for the mornings as well and some hard candy is always a welcome sight. Finally, if you’re going to carry alcohol to drink, try to bring the strongest alcohol percentage per fluid volume such as Bacardi 151. Romantic as it seems, wine is sometimes not practical. For you wine lovers however who cannot do without, consider getting the collapsible plastic wine dispensers which seal tight, and are quite durable.

Kitchenware: I think the best kind of stoves for backpacking, are the type that use the butane/propane mix. You know, the round squatty cans with the threaded nipple on top. They are easy to use and you can get the fuel anywhere. Make sure to bring a medium size plastic mug, one good plastic fork and spoon, and a spatula. For pots and pans, just bring something cheap and light, with folding handles and a nonstick coating. A Camelback drinking system is also a very good idea.

  Shop your favorite magazines titles

Tools and Miscellaneous: You’ll need at least 2 disposable lighters, and a head worn flashlight or headlamp. The tent should be as small as possible, and you should bring a map of the hiking trail. If traveling with a big group, consider the small FRS walkie talkies. First aid kits should include bandages, anti-diarrhea medicine, acetaminophen or ibuprofen, and your regular medications, and don’t forget sun-block and bug spray! Also be sure to bring a water filtration device so you don’t get sick!

So in closing, just be practical in packing your backpack! It’s not a fashion show and after a few days, you won’t much care that your clothes are dirty and you haven’t had a warm shower in a week! Just enjoy your adventure while sleeping on that hard ground, and dream about getting back to civilization!

Trans-Himalayas

February 19, 2010 | No Comments | Featured, Outdoors

The Trans-Himalayas – Quick Facts and Figures | By Danny Sherpa

The trans-Himalaya is the high-lying area just behind the main peaks of the towering Himalayan Mountains, home to the highest peaks in the world. Notable places of the trans-Himalayas include the Tibetan Plateau, the Ladakh area of the Northern Indian Himalayas (Indus Valley) along with the Lahaul-Kinnaur-Spiti region and in north-western Nepal the Dolpo/Dolpa, Mustang, Manang, Humla and Mugu areas

The landscape of the trans-Himalayas
The trans-Himalayas are characterized by very dry, arid and barren conditions, since it’s in the rain-shadow of the main Himalayan Mountain Range, where very little monsoon rain, coming in from the Bay of Bengal in July and August, reaches the trans-Himalayan areas. The altitude of the trans-Himalayan area is generally between 2,500 meters (8,500 ft) and 5,500 meters (18,000 ft). The average elevation is about 4,500 meters (15,000 ft), well above the tree-line.

Life in the trans-Himalayas
In the Dolpo trans-Himalayas (Nepal) the main livelihood has traditionally been the salt trade. It is very hard to grow crops in these altitudes, but livestock such as yaks and sheep are also raised, grassing on various high-altitude pastures.

On the Tibetan Plateau, many inhabitants live as nomads. Recently, the Tibetan nomads are starting to see their pastures, and their nomadic way of life, increasingly hard to sustain due to climate change. An ecological and cultural disaster looming!

The people living in the trans-Himalayas are largely Buddhists of the Tibetan sort. It is Buddhism mixed with ancient animism. Many old rituals are still preformed daily. His Holiness the Dalai Lama is regarded as the reincarnation of previous Gods and is the revered and worshipped spiritual leader.

The trans-Himalayas – Getting there
Getting to the trans-Himalayas has been very difficult throughout history, which have helped to preserve the unique culture of the people living there. Many weeks of mountain walking were required. Nowadays there are airplanes, roads and even a train (Beijing – Lhasa) that can take you there.

Getting to the Indian trans-Himalayas is most easily done by flying in from Delhi to Leh. There is also a drivable road crossing the Himalayas. This road crosses several passes in excess of 5,000 meters (16,500 ft) and is closed throughout wintertime. It is the second highest motorable road in the world!

The Nepal trans-Himalaya is dotted with small air-strips, allowing STOL (Short Take-off and Landing) aircrafts to fly in. But there are no scheduled flights to these remote places.

In Nepal a graveled road has now been built from Lo Manthang, “the capital of Mustang” to the Chinese border point at the Korala Pass. Lorry trucks ply regularly on this road and work is currently going on to connect the road with the main Nepalese road system which comes up to Beni.

There is also the 900 km Sino-Nepalese “Friendship Highway” that can take you up and through the Tibetan Plateau. The drive from Kathmandu to Lhasa usually takes about 5 days to complete. It is filled with stunning views of snow-capped mountain peaks, lakes, grassing yaks etc.

Krakatoa Island

December 25, 2009 | No Comments | Featured, Outdoors

All About Krakatoa Island in the Sunda Strait
| By Sara Le

Krakatoa, also spelled as Krakatao, is an island in the Sunda Strait in Indonesia. It is a volcanic island, and its name is used for the volcano, the island and the island group as well.

In 1883, the most well-known eruption of Krakatoa cemented its place as one of the most famous volcanoes in history. This eruption was among one of the most violent anywhere in human history. This eruption had the explosive power equivalent to 13,000 times the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima. It ejected about twenty-one cubic kilometers of ash, rock and pumice.

The explosion was heard as far away as Perth in Australia, which is 1930 miles away, and on the island of Rodrigues, about three thousand miles away.

Near Krakatoa, 166 towns and villages were destroyed, and 130+ cities severely damaged. More than 36,000 people were killed, with many thousand others having been injured. Tsunamis after the eruption caused many of the deaths.

Further eruptions at the site since then have actually built up new land in the same area as the original island. Its name is Anak Krakatau, which is Indonesian for “Child of Krakatoa”. This island is about two kilometers around, and at its highest point, is 300 meters high. The island grows at a rate of 5 meters a year. In an area with many destructive and famous volcanoes, Krakatoa still stands alone.

The strait in Indonesia has over 130 active volcanoes, by far the most of any nation in the world. The volcanoes make up the axis of the island arc system of Indonesia. Most of the strait’s volcanoes lie along the two largest islands, Sumatra and Java.

Volcanologists have put forward the belief that a violent eruption of Krakatoa in 535 A.D. may have been the catalyst for a global climate change that took place in 535 and 536 A.D. There isn’t any datable charcoal from that eruption that has been found to date. But this could speak of the size of Krakatoa’s caldera. Krakatoa, one of the most famous volcanoes, is also called “The Fire Mountain” by early historians, with seven eruptions tentatively dated from 850 to 1530 A.D.

Zinio Digital Magazines - Trees will thank you

Since 1950, Anak Krakatau has grown at a rate of five inches per week. The island is still very active; its most recent eruption began in 1994. Quiet periods numbering days have alternated with continuous Strombolian eruptions, and occasionally larger explosions. The most recent eruption started in 2008, when lava, rocks and hot gases were released. Volcanologists who monitor the volcano have warned area residents, boaters and tourists to stay out of a three km zone around the island.

Improvised Shelters For Winter Survival | By Michael L Schofield

Sometimes we can do just about everything right but everything can still go wrong. We could be carrying the proper gear, have the ten essentials and plenty of outdoor experience. However, just one little mistake, rapidly changing weather conditions or just fate and we could be in trouble. Shelter in the winter is your top priority. While traveling outdoors in the winter, even if you are carrying a tent it is a good idea to learn how to set up an improvised shelter just in case.

Just imagine this scenario. It is a clear day, you are out backpacking and it is just a little bit cold but nothing to write home about. There is snow on the ground but it is patchy and just ankle deep. It is getting later in the day and you decide to bag another peak before night fall. You think you can fly up the mountain and make it to the peak in lightning time without your monstrous pack. It will only take you an hour or so to make it up and back. No big deal.

You set off on your hike and are making some good time. You are just twenty minutes to the top. You notice the wind is starting to pick up and you can see the thin wisp of some clouds forming on the horizon.

Now you are not an idiot. You know the weather in the mountains, especially in the winter, can turn for the worst at just a drop of the hat. However, you decide to roll the dice and push on. As you make it to the peak you are hit with a big gust of wind. You look over to the horizon. Those thin wisps of cloud now look like gigantic cotton balls and they are getting closer.

“Oh no! This might get serious. I better get off this mountain and set up my shelter,” you say to yourself. You set off at a brisk walk as a light drizzle starts to fall. The drizzle, turns to rain, then sleet and finally buckets of snow are being dumped on the ground. You make it to the bottom and start to look for your pack. Visibility is low and the snow has coated everything in a thin white veneer. You can’t find your pack but you need to set up your tent and get inside shelter now…

An improvised shelter in a situation like this could save your bacon. Below, I have included two of the easiest improvised shelters to make. Keep reading for a detailed rundown on how to make these shelters.

Basic Considerations

If you are above the tree line and you are able to, move down to a lower elevation. If the tree line is too far away, visibility is too low or weather conditions prevent travel, try to find a spot sheltered from the wind. Avoid low lying areas close to flowing water because it is usually colder in these areas. If you are on top of a ridge or pass try to at least move down to below the crest, which will cut down on the wind.

Large rocks and boulders soak up the heat of the sun all day and radiate heat during the night. So by locating your campsite close to large rocks and boulders you will be taking advantage of heat coming off these rocks at night.

Snow Tree Pit Shelter

A Snow Tree Pit Shelter is one of the easiest improvised shelters to make and is very effective. This is how you make one:

  • Find a tree with thick overhead branches
  • Dig out the snow around the trunk until it is big enough for you to lay down inside and give you a little room to move
  • Pack the snow around the top and on the sides so it doesn’t collapse on you
  • Place branches or grass on the bottom of the shelter
  • Place bushy branches on the top of the hole to provide even more protection from the cold
  • If the snow is not of sufficient depth. You can pile up the snow around the base of the tree trunk

Lean-To Shelter

If there isn’t any snow on the ground use a Lean-To Shelter. How to make a Lean-To Shelter:

  • Find a long sturdy branch and prop or tie one end up on a tree or large rock on the side the wind is blowing from
  • Place other sturdy branches at a 45 degree angle leading from the long branch to the ground
  • Place bushy branches, grass and leaves along the windward side of the long branch starting from the bottom and working your way up
  • Line the floor of the shelter with leaves and bushy branches to keep you from laying on the cold ground
  • Make a wind screen/ heat reflector on the open side by piling up more branches make sure to leave enough room to build a fire without burning your structure down

The scenario I presented to you or something similar could put you in harms way when traveling outdoors during the winter. Your pack can be lost, your tent could get damaged or any number of things could happen. In situations like this learning how to improvise could mean the difference between living or being carted out of the wilderness a popsicle in a body bag.
