The friend part is someone to do things with. The toxic part comes into play when your “friend” dumps her emotional garbage on you or belittles you.   2. Notice how you feel about the her. Not just when you’re with her but afterward. If you feel weird, something’s up. It doesn’t matter if it makes sense; this is your gut feeling and may have nothing to do with logic.
  3. Keep the relationship “surface” for a good period of time. It shouldn’t take long to know if she is toxic but if you plan major outings or get in too deep, extricating yourself after toxicity sets in is more challenging. Toxic people are game players and can make you feel guilty for something they did.

What do do about it:

If you meet someone you feel is a toxic friend in the making, RUN…fast! If you already have a toxic friend you would like to rid yourself of, you’ll need to establish and enforce personal boundaries. That is determining what is acceptable to you, what is unacceptable to you and what you will do, both verbally and physically when someone crosses the line.

Women considered to be ’emotionally intelligent’ – can express their feelings and read those of others – have better sex lives, recent research from the UK shows.

This makes sense doesn’t it? Smart women can read situations better, are more in touch with their feelings and are more likely to get what they want from their partner sexually. According to this recent research, emotionally intelligent women have twice as many orgasms. The results also show that 40% of women find it difficult to fully enjoy sex.

I spoke with Kim Gillespie recently about this. Kim and her business Secrets from The Boudoir specialize in female sexuality. Why does this continue to be such a complex area for many women? I asked Kim this and for any tips she felt would be helpful. Her thoughts are below.

1. Good sex does begin in the brain. It is as simple and as straight forward as that. If, for example, you are holding in anger – it will be very difficult to get in the mood for sex.

In my experience, many women are holding in a lot of repressed anger and this inhibits their sexual pleasure.

Please ladies, if this is the case with you then go and see a psychologist who specializes in women’s issues. You owe it to yourself to get to the bottom of your anger and resentment. Try to communicate your feelings more and/or do other activities that have a calming effect on you such as meditation, yoga and relaxation exercises. The most important thing is to stop internalizing anger and pain. Your long-term sexual satisfaction really does depend on it.

2. Lubrication – many things can affect vaginal lubrication. Hormones or medications, for example, can impact. More importantly, a lack of stimulation has a dramatic impact on sexual pleasure. Women in general need at least 20- 30 minutes of foreplay to achieve orgasm and the average male needs only 3-5 minutes. It is not a failure on the woman’s part to need extra lubrication but you need to feel confident and comfortable enough to communicate this to your partner. If you feel dryness is a problem even with extended foreplay, then see your family doctor for advice and invest in a good quality natural lubricant (SYLK – can be bought from most chemists and supermarkets)

3. Attitude – if you want to feel sexy… you have to think sexy. Our sexuality is all about embracing ourselves as the wonderful, amazing women that we are. Who cares if we don’t have a perfect size 10 body? Most women have wrinkles and cellulite and a little extra padding. Ladies EMBRACE YOUR CURVES. Look at Beyonce and Jennifer Lopez – with curves that would be shunned by any modeling agency. They make no apology for their sexy, full, womanly figures. When you have a sparkle in your eyes, know who you are and where you are headed, you realize the only one holding the key to your own sexual pleasure and enjoyment is you.

4. Too tired for sex – of course you are tired. Modern lives are very hectic for women with kids, career, family and running a household. We all need to slow down and take time out for ourselves. We need to remember to live sensually as women and take the time out to enjoy sexual pleasure. Even if you feel tired initially, it is amazing how quickly you can get in the mood with the right partner. Make time for sexual pleasure.

6. Foreplay – every man needs be taught that foreplay should last 24/7. We need to communicate this to our partners and insist we are feeling valued at all times of the day, not just when it comes to sex.

7. Get to know your own body – learn how your body responds to touch, discover what you like and dislike. If you don’t know what turns you on, then it will be difficult to tell your partner what pleasures you.

8. Embrace your sensuality – looking after your body is important. We need to cherish the temple in which we live! When you rub body lotion onto your skin, do you just slather it in or do you gently massage it into your skin? Take the time to think about how it feels on your skin – is it hot /cold? What does it smell like? How does your skin feel as you glide it over your curves?

Spoil yourself with sexy lingerie. Take notice of how your body moves when you are feeling more confident and sexy. Instead of dragging your body around, climb back in and really feel how amazing it is to be inside.

9. Try a new rule – instead of giving pleasure first, make sure you orgasm before he heads down his pathway to pleasure.

10. Get in touch with your body first, and speak up – it’s time to start feeling good about yourself and your sexuality.

People come in all shapes and sizes, and this sometimes makes the ‘one size fits all’ approach rather difficult – particularly when choosing which clothes to buy, and which exercise and dietary regimes to follow. After all, what suits your friend may not suit you, and rather than trying to shoe-horn yourself into something that’s not right for you – you can use a little knowledge about the different body shapes to your benefit!

There are basically three main body shapes recognised by the health and medical profession.

Ectomorphs
These people have slim bodies and long lean limbs, with shoulders and hips of a similar width. They find it very difficult to build muscles, and have a hard time maintaining their weight. This body type is also rather more prone to injuries than other types, so they should look to stretch properly before and after exercise to avoid pulls and sprains. Good types of exercise include cycling, martial arts and fast walking or jogging – this type has good explosive energy and speed. In terms of clothes, this type can get away with most things – fitted looks are best to create curves and they can generally carry off more daring styles. Long slim legs can be shown off to great effect with short skirts or skinny jeans!

Endomorphs
These types are the classic pear shape – the shape most seen in the UK. It’s a round, soft and curvy body type with a relatively larger bone structure. This type can put on muscle, but they may find losing fat and weight in general somewhat harder. Women should focus on weight training though to build lean muscle and keep fat under control – as well as boosting metabolism. Cross training, weights, interval training and hill walking are ideal exercises. Good clothing choice include fitted tops and flowing and lower cut trousers and jeans. Aim to wear heels where you can to lengthen legs, and show off your neat top half and trim arms!

Mesomorphs
These types are classic rugby players! They have broad shoulders and large or medium frames. They loose weight quite easily, and gain muscle easily. Boot camp is ideal for their fitness! Weight training is also good, as well as yoga. These are strong types and tend to be strong. In terms of choosing fashions, your body shape is balanced, so show off your favourite part – whether it’s your well defined calves, strong arms or excellent muscle tone – don’t be tempted to hide away under baggy or shapeless clothes.

The important thing about each type is recognising that you can’t necessarily change to a different type, but you can look fantastic regardless of your basic body make up! Keep fit and exercise to look and feel your best, and stick to a healthy diet to keep fat and weight at healthy levels. Similarly with clothing, look at friends and people with similar shapes that wear fashions and styles that you admire, and ask them for tips and guidance! Whatever you do, don’t attempt to copy the fashions of your skinny ectomorph friend if you’re a broad mesomorph.. but just remember that she will probably by envying your well developed chest, despite her long thin legs!

Reuse an old plastic bag or use a cotton shopper that can fold up inside your handbag instead.

Book/magazine – you will regret not bringing a book with you when you’re sat in a cafe/restaurant alone and have nothing to look at but the smoochy couple sat at the table next to you.

Diary – unless you have a fancy mobile phone you’ll need something in your bag which acts as an organiser. Otherwise you’ll forget what day of the week it is.

Makeup – how many times have you gone straight from work to a bar or restaurant feeling slightly ‘naked’ as the makeup on your face has miraculously disappeared? Don’t let this happen again!

Tissues – toilets without paper, sneezes, hay fever…we all need tissues.

Tampon/San pads – don’t be caught out again, make sure that you always have a tampon with you!

Pen – you’ll need this to write in your diary or your number on his arm.

Keys – you don’t want to be locked out do you? Then don’t forget your keys.

MP3 player with headphones – sunny lunch hour in the park? Lonesome walk across the bridge? This needs a soundtrack.

Safety pins – why doesn’t everyone keep at least one in their bag? Safety pins are so handy. Broken bra strap? No worries. Broken bag? No worries. Broken heart? Well we can’t help you there…

Plasters – sore feet from painful shoes aren’t pleasant at all and can actually ruin your day. Make sure you keep a couple of plasters in your bag. You’ll be so grateful the day you need them.

Comb or hairbrush – cave woman chic? We don’t think so. Tidy yourself up a little and keep your hair sleek.

Vaseline – great for dry lips, dry hands and getting a ring off your finger if it gets stuck.

Moisturiser with SPF – chapped dry skin isn’t fun and neither is sunburn. Make sure you keep a mini bottle or sachet of moisturiser in your bag that contains a medium to high sun protection factor.

Sunglasses – for sunny days, hangovers and those who like to look a little mysterious.

Wet wipes – spillages, dirty hands, armpits – your choice.

Chewing gum/mints – keep fresh throughout the day, for your sake and everyone else’s.
