I remember the happiest day of my life being the day my family went out and got our new little puppy. He was so cute, and so well behaved. Well, that lasted for about 24 hours until we brought him home, and he started chewing on everything! That’s when I had to learn how to stop dog chewing, and gain control of my dog.

Well, eventually (with a little help) I got my dog under control, and now I feel like I’m ready to pass on this information to whoever is reading this. Below I’ve put a few of the ig mistakes that new dog owners make when teaching a dog not to chew.

1. Although it’s fun, I recommend never playing tug-of-war with your dog. You enjoy it, and your dog enjoys it, so what could be wrong? Well, what happens, is your dog sees this fight for the toy as a fight for dominance, so if your dog gets the toy, he thinks he owns you. And if he owns you, he owns everything else, and can chew whatever he wants.
2. Have you ever given your dog an old shoe or a make-shift toy for him to chew on? Well, your dog can’t really tell the difference between old lawn-mowing shoes, and brand new work shoes, so he will just chew whichever one is closest. To avoid this, just simply avoid giving your dog anything that resembles something of yours.
3. Have you ever come home to find your house destroyed? I think all new dog owners have. Well, the worst thing you can do here is attack your dog and scold him. That’s because he doesn’t know he did something wrong, so scolding him then would serve no purpose. The only time you can really scold a dog is if you catch him/her in the act of doing something wrong.
