Getting Back on the Bike? | By Jim Buchanan

Are you a former motorcyclist, with thoughts of getting back on the bike? Whatever the reason you’re ready to ride again-children grown and on their own, extra income to support your habit, or you have gouged out enough time in your schedule to get back to your passion-there are a couple things to consider.

I’m sure you have forgotten about some of the negative things about riding, and are only focused on the rush of being out on the road, the feelings of freedom from being on your bike. There is nothing wrong with that, but take some time to get yourself back up to speed as far as what’s been happening in the motorcycle world.

Motorcycle Sport & Leisure is a monthly 116 page full colour magazine covering all aspects of modern leisure bike riding. New bike reviews, product news and events add to the unique mix of touring features and long term road tests.

Some things have changed more than others, so before you impulsively get to your motorcycle dealer and buy the biggest, baddest, best looking machine in the shop, it’s time to take a few steps back and start from the beginning. Motorbikes have undergone changes, and have become bigger, better, and faster than you remember. While that may just be the exciting news you were hoping to hear, you should definitely take some time to do research in order to find the best bike to fit your needs. Do you need to jump on the fastest bike you can find? I’m sure it sounds appealing, but really, what would you tell your son or daughter? Probably to take it easy and find something safe, something that fits you well, and most importantly, something that is affordable. I know it sounds boring, but consider starting out with a smaller bike, and ride that for a season before shelling out a king’s ransom for a brand new behemoth.

After you research motorcycles, and you’ve made the plunge, it is never a bad thing to enroll in a motorcycle safety course to sharpen your riding skills and get used to your new bike. Some insurance companies may offer discounts for completing the safety course also. Another area that has rapidly changed is motorcycle apparel. The past several years has seen great strides in protection, both from the elements, and from injury. Again, it’s worthwhile to take some time and do some research-you can quickly research and get reviews on available apparel online. Get suggestions for the type of clothing you should wear based on weather, comfort, and what sort of riding you will be doing.

While I realize in some states helmets are optional, do yourself a favor, and find a good helmet that is properly fitted. As far as riding goes, always stay focused, and anticipate possible danger. Prepare for weather, and don’t speed. Did you get that? It’s an important point, so let’s cover that one again: don’t speed. I know the urge will be there to get out and ride just like the old days, but do yourself (and everyone else on the road) a favor-be smart, and be safe. Before you know it, you will feel as if you never left the wonderful world of motorcycles. Welcome back. . . .
