Top 5 Fashion Must Haves For Spring-Summer 2009A Recessionistica’s Guide | By Janice Wee

Recession or not, a girl needs decent clothes. What are the must haves this season every woman should own?

There are the very trendy clothes that may no longer be relevant next year. With the economy as it is, you might want to give those a pass.

Treat your wardrobe as an investment. What are the gorgeous pieces that can take you from this season through many Springs and Summers to come?

Dynasty style shoulder pads may be back but rather than buy one of the current heavily padded jackets or tops that would probably be out of fashion this year. If you must have that look, go dig up some old clothes that do have huge shoulder pads. Unpick them and remove them from these clothes and sew them into your existing jackets to get that look. Then when the fad is over, remove the shoulder pads.

Here’s what you should get instead.

1. Mini Dress
One hot trend that will never truly die out is the mini dress. You see that at every collection this year. Dresses are either minis that end mid thigh, or long gowns for the evening. A mini dress need not be slutty. Don’t bare cleavage and plenty of leg at the same time. Flaunt one, cover the other. This season, arms, legs and shoulders are the erogenous zones. What’s hot? Toga dresses that show off one shoulder, halter dresses and bustier tops that show off both shoulders or the asymmetrical dress. You know the new look where the dress has one long sleeve but the neckline slants down beneath the other arm to bare the other shoulder. These are the mini dresses to get this season, which you can still wear for many summers to come.

2. White Dress.
This is a summer staple. White looks great in the hot sun. A white dress makes a woman stand out beautifully, when surrounded by green grass and flowers in the park or the sand and sea at the beach. This season offers a myriad of white dresses, from mini dresses to long gowns. From girlish cotton dresses to the sexy mini dresses, to silky, floaty dresses that make you look ethereal. Pick one that suits your personality.

3. Strappy Shoes
High heel shoes make an amazing difference to the way a woman looks. This season strappy heels abound. Those with straps that wrap around the ankle are absolutely gorgeous. If heels aren’t for you, there are flats with straps that wrap around your ankle too. Consider getting those if you don’t want a Prada fall.

4. Silk Pants
Looks like the pajama pants trend isn’t going to die out. Silky pants are here to stay. Get yourself a pair of silk pants. These should drape your legs. Pick them in a neutral shade. Preferably in a color that matches a silk jacket so that you can wear them to work as well as for play. Silk pants in neutrals like gray, black, nude or white, this season’s colors, go with everything and you can wear them year after year.

5. Halters
Halter tops and halter dresses are the big thing this season. These are seen everywhere. The halter could be with cut in shoulders, fully covered behind, with a bare back or cross straps behind. Either way, show off your arms and shoulders this season by wearing halters. (Get them toned if you must but flaunt them once you can). There are so many gorgeous halters this season so stock up on them because these are timeless.

How to Find the Correct Bra Fit | By Paul Bowers

According to an article in The Times a ridiculously large amount of women are wearing the wrong bra size. So how do you know if you’ve got it right? Basically, you should feel comfortable in your bra. It shouldn’t be too tight or leave red marks behind. Nor should it be too baggy. If you can easily fit more than two fingers under the band of your bra than it may well be too big.

Underbust Measurement

- Using a tape measure which shows inches, measure the circumference of your chest, just under your breasts.

- If you get an even number, add four inches to it.
- If you get an odd number, add 5 inches.

This number will be your underbust size.

So, if your measurement is 28 inches, add 4, making you a size 32. If you measure 31, add 5, making you a 36.

Overbust Measurement

Measure round the fullest part of your bust to find your Cup Size.

Let’s use me as an example.

- The circumference under my bust is 26 inches.
- So I add 4, giving me an underbust measurement of 30 inches.
- My overbust measurement is 31 inches, which is 1 inch more than my underbust measurement.
- This means I am a cup size B.
- Ergo, my bra size is 30B (almost impossible to find in shops, but that’s another story).

Problem solving:

Bra rides up at the back

- move the hook-and-eye closure to a tighter setting
- loosen the straps
- try a smaller band size (e.g. 34″ instead of 36″)

The band digs in

- go one band size larger
- choose a bra with a vertically wider band

The sides bulge

- move up one band size
- opt for a style with more cup coverage

The cups overflow

- go one cup size larger (e.g. C to D).

  Shop your favorite magazines titles

The straps slip

- tighten straps
- opt for bra with wider straps
- choose fully adjustable straps (instead of ones which can only be adjusted up to the top of the shoulder)

Bra leaves red marks on your shoulders

- loosen bra straps
- opt for one with wider or padded straps

Underwires pinch or hurt

- go one cup size larger (e.g.B to C)
- try a non-underwire soft cup style

There are many different styles available and moulded cups can give as much support as underwire bras!

Top 10 Tips to Great Style For Men | By Debbie Burgin

1. Very few things are sexier than a man who knows how to rock a blazer with a cool shirt and jeans. But most men can’t manage it. They either end up in a semi-formal suit and tie look or plain old jeans and a T-shirt. For them, there’s no in between. To those men, I would suggest that you try thinking about it terms of being “semi-casual”. Odds are, you’ll end up with something a whole lot more stylish.

2. You men who insist on shopping alone, stop it. You should never shop alone. Especially those of you who readily admit that you’re “fashion challenged”. Always take along a shopping buddy, preferably a female, and no, not your mother. A woman will give you on point guidance to getting the look that you SHOULD be after. Being stylish is all about finding the place that carries the pieces that cater to your unique style, whether that style comes from GAP or Tom Ford. Styles change. Certain pieces are classics that tend to last, but men need to keep updating their wardrobes in general. Fashion trend changes are generally pretty subtle. For example, denim is getting slimmer. If you’re wearing jeans from even a year ago, they most likely aren’t cutting it. Time to get a new pair.

3. Most women aren’t into the “hairy bear” look, and overplucked, overwaxed men are scary on so many levels. Gentlemen, if your eyebrows are nicer than mine are, I’ll run. We women want a man who looks like he takes care of himself but doesn’t look as though he pays more attention to it than we do. Tweeze with caution.

4. We women notice two things about a man’s appearance; his shoes and his watch (some of us also notice his teeth, but that’s a topic for another article). Head in the direction of understated elegance, whether it’s a classic Cartier or a watch that belonged to your grandfather. It’s the same with the shoes. They should look ‘well loved’ but not scruffy.

5. Gentlemen, there’s no such thing as a ‘skater man’. Skater shoes are for skater BOYS. Period.

6. Few men can pull off facial hair with any kind of style. Bad grooming decisions are made right before your very eyes when it comes to facial hair…in the mirror. If you’re gonna rock the facial hair, make it something clean and stylish like a well-trimmed goatee, also known as the ‘baby beard’. The goatee comes in many forms-the French fork, the musketeer, the Vandyke, and none are easy to master, but done correctly, they can lengthen a round face, or give strength to a not so strong chin.

7. Those massive, oversized jeans that hang just below your backside ARE NOT CUTE. Buy jeans that fit. Period.

8. Nail biting is a definite no no. Unless you want to come across as an insecure, prepubescent teenager, don’t do it.

9. If you MUST wear sandals (“Mandals” to us), PULEEEASE make sure that your feet are ready to see the glorious light of day. Nothing’s worse than a man who’s dressed to kill (even if casually dressed) with thick cracked heels, and ragged toenails. Ick…

10. Last but DEFINITELY not least, being mindful of the sixth rule of style with regard to facial hair (see above), one is better off to stay away from the dreaded moustache. They don’t look good on anyone, and they make a man look 10 to 15 years older. Avoid them at all costs.

Our Fascination With Celebrities | By Denise Gallimore

Like our fascination in watching an ant (or the entire anthill for that matter) squirm when we angle the magnifying glass just so at the sun, so too goes our fascination with celebrity. As the latest installment of American Idol shows, the average man just wants to be acknowledged and what better way than becoming a ‘star’. A lot of us dream of it, very few of us attain it and for those lucky (or unlucky depending on your perspective) to be under the magnifying glass of celebrity the rewards seem to be great.

Through compelling journalism, a sense of humor and an authentic voice, the magazine speaks to every aspect of a woman's life including health, fitness, nutrition, emotional well-being, sex, relationships, beauty and style.

Not having ever been a celebrity myself, although I am somewhat of a ‘big cheese’ in my home town (smugly buffs nails on shirt), I must say that being a celebrity doesn’t seem all bad. I would take the money and the gift bags and the free things and umm did I say money? … Yeah, I would greatly enjoy the perks of ‘celebrityhood’ (or is it celebritydom?) any day but how many of us could live up to that scrutiny?

To have your every move recorded, your relationships scrutinized, your smallest slip-up or shortcoming discussed by millions (for those of us with large families we already get a taste of this … Thanks Mom!). Now I know some of you are thinking the money and perks would balance this out but think about the freedom of anonymity you have now, you can pick your nose in public if you want to, you may get a few stares but ‘the event’ will not be recorded and picked over (pun intended, Ha!) for time immemorial.

But why are we so fascinated? Does our fascination help us to feel better about ourselves? Or is it sparked by envy? For whatever reasons celebrity news and gossip is big business and with the latest news being available at our fingertips everyone and their grandmothers has a blog about one celebrity or other. Many of us readily denounce gossiping in our daily lives yet feed our guilty pleasure by logging on to the latest ‘most hated celebrity’ blogs to see the latest snide comments about this or that person.

Zinio.com - Centerfolds without the Staples

Our celebrities have become like that poor fried ant. We feel superior as we sit at our desks and look with pity or scorn at the latest young celebrity to end up in jail or forget their panties or fall flat on their face drunk. But alas fame and celebrity are synonymous and as Newton said for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction so too the money and perks cause curiosity and the paparazzi. Now … since it’s been more than an hour since I checked that blog, I’m now off to see what Britney is up to.
