What is Poaching?

What is Poaching?
| By Joseph Devine

Hunting for sport is popular in areas that have woods, streams, and land populated with wildlife. Hunting and fishing is regulated and controlled by Federal, state, and local institutions to make sure that all actions are done legally. The act of hunting, fishing, or gathering fruits and other products from the land in an illegal manner is defined as poaching. In most states, poaching is considered a criminal offense, punishable by fines and criminal prosecution.

Specific seasons for hunting and fishing are typically established to protect wildlife from being hunted during breeding season. Hunters should be aware of the rules and regulations regarding each season and should consult their local wildlife office if they have any questions or concerns. Most states require all hunters and fishermen to apply for permits before they head out to hunt or fish.

Examples of Poaching

Actions that may be considered poaching may include:

• Taking fish from a lake, stream, or pond without a proper license, or during a prohibited season.
• Hunting game without proper state permits.
• Hunting during prohibited season.
• Hunting or fishing on private property without consent of the property owner.
• Removing plants, fruit, vegetables, firewood, or other products of the land from private property.
• Using prohibited or illegal weapons to hunt game.
• Using illegal methods or means to fish or hunt game.
• Hunting or fishing for endangered or prohibited species.

It is important to note that different states have laws regarding the method and manner in which game is hunted. Hunters that use bows, rifles, shotguns, and other weapons should consult state and local regulations to find out information about which seasons each weapon may be used. Information may be available through specialty stores, government offices, or posted online.

Only wildlife, fruits, vegetables, firewood, and other products that come naturally from the land may be poached. The act of taking domestic animals is considered theft. Any individual looking to hunt or fish should make sure to apply for all of the proper permits before taking any action. Poaching causes serious environmental damage and should be avoided at all costs.
